ELMWOOD PLACE, Ohio — A train struck and injured a pedestrian who was sending a text message on his cell phone while crossing railroad tracks, a collision that hurled him about 50 feet, authorities and witnesses said Monday.

Zachariah Smith, 18, waited for a southbound train to pass Monday morning. He then walked around a gate and onto the tracks, apparently unaware that another train was coming from the other direction, said witness Mike Billups.

Some think that this is only a recent problem, well it is in a way but not paying attention has usually been the cause of most MVA's, but now we get to pay more of our tax dollars to have the state government come up with special laws. This ticks me off because we have laws on the books now that would cover it but no, they'll want special ones.
Then the more obvious issue, injuries. Then comes higher insurance rates. How many of us knows someone that's had to replace tires, wheels, fenders and more because they were driving and texting, let alone yappin on the cell. And I don't see the benefit or a hands free set up either. Let's be honest, if you're talking on the phone, trying to hear, just how well are you paying attention? I'm thinking not to much.
This is one of those things we need to police ourselves with and just put the damn phone down while driving or pull over in a safe location.
