DoD has developed a comprehensive handbook on compensation and other benefits for U.S. servicemembers who separate or retire from service because of illness or injury. The publication also includes information on other agencies that offer assistance.
The handbook describes the disability eligibility process, various program qualifications, application procedures and information on numerous resources. Helpful Web sites and toll-free numbers are listed; the electronic version (http://www.transitionassistanceprogram.com/portal/transition/resources/PDF/Compensation_and_Benefits_Handbook.pdf) includes hyperlinks. The printed handbook will be updated annually and the online edition will be updated more frequently.
DoD has also announced the establishment of the Wounded Warrior Resource Center to report concerns with military facilities, health-care services, benefits information, and any other difficulties encountered during the recovery process.
Servicemembers can now call (800) 342-9647 or e-mail wwrc@militaryonesource.com, 24/7, to request support. Specially trained consultants will identify the appropriate "warm hand-off" to a military service or federal agency that can resolve the matter. The resource center consultant will maintain communication with the caller until the issue or concern is resolved.
The assistance provided by the resource center does not replace the specialized wounded warrior programs established by each military service, but offers another avenue of assistance with military facilities, health-care services, and/or benefits information.
